Our Wankers this week are the management of "The Hereward", a pub in Ely, Cambridgeshire. They distinguished themselves the other day by insisting that a tiny 82-year-old retired teacher take off her rain hat in case she was a trouble-maker who needed to be identified from their CCTV footage. The old lady, Betty Wilbraham, is obviously a habitual hooligan whose antisocial activities include the inappropriate drinking of a half of Guinness, viciously ordering fish-and-chips at the bar, and wearing an unprovoked hat. Thugs like her clearly need to be rooted out of our society. Why should law-abiding youths in hoodies have to share a public bar with old tearaways of her sort? Landlord Tony Love said it was pub policy to ask people to remove their hats. Sarah Calderbank, of the Barracuda Group which owns The Hereward, said: "Hats are banned in most of our pubs for the security and protection of our customers. We're not alone. A lot of other pubs do not allow customers to wear hats." Well, that's all right then. So long as all the other pubs are doing something stupid, it's OK for The Hereward to do it as well.
